Falling In Love Again

I’ve recently witnessed something that I would say is somewhat miraculous. After many months of difficult trials, two friends of mine are falling in love with each other again. Their marriage had been prayed over by many people during the difficult time that lead up to their reconciliation. God answers prayers. They just celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary by renewing their vows.

There are many factors that contribute to relationships falling apart, but one that stands out is a lack of mutual pursuit. We can make vows to each other on our wedding day and think that settles it, but if we take our spouse for granted and give up pursuing them then the relationship is bound to grow cold.

The same can be said about our relationship with God, but with one big difference: He is always holding up His end of the deal in His pursuit of us. We no doubt felt love for Jesus when we answered His call to us. Some may say that receiving Christ through salvation is enough. However, we’re missing out on all of the blessings of a deeper, more meaningful love that happens when we make an effort to know Him better.

Jesus said, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.” We must take our spiritual poverty and give it over to the One who provides fulfillment. While we’ll never know Him fully on this side of Heaven, we can keep making small advances in our pursuit to grow more and more in love with our Savior. As the philosopher Lao Tzu said, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.” Take a step toward the Kingdom of Heaven today.
