Unlike shrines to foreign gods in the Old Testament, today we set up hidden altars in our hearts. You may be unknowingly serving an idol if good things—things like secure borders or racial justice, for example—becomes ultimate things. If you can’t fellowship with someone unless they agree on your issue or position, then it may be an idol. Any political position that causes you to hate your enemies or fail to love your neighbors requires repentance.

• Pray that God would reveal anything that has become an idol in your heart.

• Pray against political idols.

Lord, search my heart and know my thoughts (Ps. 139:23). Uncover anything in my heart that may be claiming my ultimate allegiance. Jesus, you alone are my Savior and Lord. Remove any idols in my heart, and help me to trust you with my political convictions. Amen.
