You might recognize this as the first of the Ten Commandments. The Ten Commandments are foundational in their application, through Christ, to any just society. The key, though, is “through Christ,” who himself fulfilled the law and the prophets (Luke 24:44). Jesus, in his life, death, and resurrection, summed up all God’s law into two categories: loving God and loving our neighbor as ourselves. Doing that means working for justice and mercy, seeking conformity to God’s word and transformation for individuals and society by the power of the Holy Spirit.

• Pray for a just society founded on love for God and neighbor.

• Pray for the transforming power of the Spirit in your life and community.

Holy Lord, thank you for giving us your law, because your law is just and true. May our laws reflect your perfect justice, and may love, which through your Son fulfills the law, govern all our thoughts and actions. Help us to love you and love our neighbors, by the transforming power of your Spirit. Amen.
